Destructive Emotions Live Rent Free In Your Body... Until You Evict Them!

Do you ever sense that there’s a part of you that just wants to see you suffer, make you miserable? Does it sometimes feel like you are your own worst enemy? I’ll bet that there are some times when the voices inside your head pushed you to do things that you really didn’t want to do and then you blamed yourself and compounded the pain.

Maybe you’re a gal who sometimes eats when you aren’t hungry and for some reason just can’t stop eating even after you decided that you didn’t like the taste of the food. Have you ever felt like you were punishing yourself by taking huge chunks of food, stuffing them into your mouth and never really taking the time to swallow or taste?

    I have!

Self Care Sometimes Means Setting Better Boundaries and Saying “No”

I was coaching a new client today who has been suffering from a severe case of depression.  Recently she returned home from a stay at a Psychiatric Hospital.  She had been neglecting to take her medication and consequently, her system went on overload.

Today on our coaching call, she shared with me her thoughts and feelings about how she had come to feel out of touch with herself and her needs.  In a sober moment of realization, she recognized that she was responsible for her own care and not necessarily the wellbeing of others.

Revive Your Passions: Key #1 To Transforming Your Relationship With Food

Last week, I was in Manhattan in the Chelsea section and had some time to kill before an appointment. I noticed a little quilt shop around the corner from my meeting place, It was called The City Quilter. The colorful display in the window drew me like a moth to the flame. I walked into the store and was unprepared for what I discovered.  As soon as I took my first step into the store, I was seduced by the stunning and vibrant colors of lovely quilt fabrics lined up against the walls. I was blown away by the artful placement and juxtaposition of the gorgeous hues as they stood proudly next to each other on shelves lining the walls.

Remembering how my grandmother (who I referred to as "Nana") and I used to spend time in fabric shops, making quilts and dressmaking, I began to tear up as I stood there positively enchanted by all the lovely fabrics.  Then for the next 45 minutes, I was like a kid in a candy store, floating throughout the space, experiencing "the hand"(enjoying the sense of touching) of all the materials, exploring, reacquainting myself with all of my old sewing friends, thread, measuring tape, instruction books, gadgets and all other goodies connected with the art of sewing.

Weight Struggles With Kids: Let the Change Begin Within

This morning, as I was bouncing on my rebounder, I watched from the den as my 10 year old daughter Cara prepared her lunch in the kitchen.  She spread a slice of bread with some peanut butter folded it in half and then took out a container and filled it with salad, then she removed an apple from the refrigerator and smiled. As I ended my workout, I asked her, “Ooh, what’s that?” She told me.  I’m making lunch.

Knowing that she had been getting school lunch, I asked her why she was making the sandwich. She explained to me that the food offered on today’s school menu did not “appeal” to her and that she wanted something different. She said, “those mozzarella sticks are too salty” for me. I smiled, pointed to the jar of peanut butter and asked her if she would fix one of those yummy sandwiches for me.

Making Peace With Food: Healing From Within

I just finished a book called, Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works! It was written by two nutrition therapists named, Evelyn Tribole M.S. R.D., and Elyse Resch M.S. R.D. These brilliant women realized the need for a radical change in our society’s thinking in relation to our beliefs about our bodies and our relationship to food.

This book is considered to be the ‘bible and guidebook’ for healing a person’s dysfunctional relationship to food and their body.  It is used by many centers for treatment for people dealing with eating addictions and disorders.  The information in this book really shakes up the old paradigm of dieting to become thin and puts that old, outdated thinking through the ringer.

Doc Frost: Toss Your Scale Not Your Cookies!

It is with the greatest pleasure that I’d like to introduce you to my esteemed colleague, Doctor Harold Frost.  Doc Frost is a 25 year veteran in the battle against eating disorders.  He met his first eating disorder patient way back in 1980.  He became so fascinated with how women focus on their bodies and food in an effort to give themselves a sense of structure and control in their lives that he ended up doing his Doctoral Dissertation entitled, “Towards an Understanding of the Etiology and Treatment of Bulimia.”

It was his review of the literature as well as his working with the forty women involved in his study, that laid the foundation for him being able to successfully help hundreds of men and women break the chains that bound them to their eating addictions.

    Subconscious Memories Cause Sabotaging Behaviors

Yesterday I became aware of something very important.  I was in an Advanced NLP Training Seminar called Provocative Therapy led by Frank Farrelly, the original creator of this unique style of therapy.

The format of this particular training seminar is an interview process. I chose to volunteer to be coached by Frank, knowing full well that I would be totally vulnerable to discuss any aspect of my life.

I had come to the realization that I was stuck.  I have a big presentation to prepare for and I noticed that I was playing all of my procrastination games again.  For the past few weeks, my desk has been littered with papers, books, CDs, DVDs and computers.  I’ve been losing focus and feeling insecure.  Not a good thing.

    Fat Thinking

What is fat thinking you might ask? For me, I would have to say that it is all or nothing thinking, take no prisoners, I hate myself type of thinking.  A lot to swallow.  It sticks in your throat and prevents you from truly expressing yourself.

It reminds me of a story of a dear friend of mine.  We’ll call her Sally.  Sally is a beautiful talented woman who is an artist who has honed her craft after years of work and practice.  She’s the cream of the crop.

    Diets Trigger Binges

Diets just don’t work! Have you ever noticed that when you are on a diet, you tend to think about food all the time. There’s a reason for that.  When you fast or restrict your food intake, your body gets the message that it is starving and it will turn on all the neurological switches in your brain imploring you to eat!

That means that a binge is right around the corner. Your tendency to give in and eat is not a question of any lack of will power on your part, rather, it’s actually a biological urge that has been tapped in your body. When you’re on a diet, and your body is not getting the nutrition that it needs, your body’s signals get crossed.
