Jack Canfield's Success Principle #1 - Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life

How many times have you experienced something that upset you and immediately found yourself eating out of control as a result of not knowing how to handle the stress?

Do you have situations in your life where you feel like you are a victim and can’t get out of a role that you fear has been carved out for you by others? I’d like to share something that I learned yesterday.

Recently a friend and colleague of mine offered me an opportunity to read Jack Canfield’s book, “The Success Principles: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be.” She invited me to be her buddy and to go through the book, chapter by chapter and do all of the exercises one by one and check in with her periodically and share and support each other in completing each task. I was excited and jumped at the chance for this unique opportunity to be accountable and uplevel my life.

Yesterday I started really reading the book and the first of Jack’s principles is this:

Take 100% responsibility for everything that happens in your life. He went on to explain how we all avoid doing this and if we take responsibility for everything that happens, by doing that we also take responsibility for changing anything that we don’t like about our life.

I’m sure that you can relate and think about certain situations in your own life where you feel that you had no say in the matter, no choices, no voice. Let’s just set aside the whole argument about reincarnation, and just consider taking responsibility for everything that has happened throughout your adulthood.

What would change if you believed that you had said or done or allowed yourself to be put in the position that you now face? What would you do to extricate yourself from that situation so that you could enjoy new freedom, have more choices, be more powerful?

Fat Days and Bloated Feelings Caused by Stuffing Your Emotions and Stifling Your Words

I woke up feeling fat today. It’s been awhile since I’ve felt like that but my body tells me that something is wrong. In the past, I used to think that my fat days were the result of overeating or eating foods that tend to bloat my body. Now I think of those days as a barometer indicating where my feelings are and what the focus of my thoughts is at any given time.

Perhaps too, the food I ate last night was a bit saltier than usual, nonetheless, I think that the reason that I feel fat today is not what I ate, but what I neglected to say.

Yesterday afternoon I had a conversation with my father and we talked about many things. I shared my thoughts with him and felt really close to him again. Then the conversation drifted to something that I felt very strongly about but I didn’t feel comfortable speaking my mind, fearing his judgment of me. As a result, I held my tongue and hung back. Soon after I ended the conversation.

Freedom from Weight Obsession Evolves As You Make Friends with Your "Fat" Parts

Weight Obsession is a national pastime. Most women say they hate their bodies because they are too fat. Being obsessed with how I looked has certainly been a big part of my life. I've spent years as a frustrated woman, bouncing back and forth from diet to diet, until I found Weight Watchers and followed through, going back as many as 20 times in an attempt to lose weight. Then in 2001, I finally reached my goal weight. I managed to keep the weight off for over 6 years, thinking that I had it all figured out. Yet my life was miserable. I was caught in patterns of overeating, overexercising and in constant fear of regaining the weight. I thought if only I could control what I was eating, I’d be okay.

Now I realize that the dieting was a part of the problem that distracted me from looking at parts of my life that were unfulfilling.

As a Master Practitioner in the field of Neuro Linguistic Programming, one day I learned that our weight issues are not our fault and they’re not a reflection of who you are. “There’s nothing wrong with you! If diets haven’t already helped you to lose weight and keep it off, they probably never will. Your tendency to eat when you're under stress is no different from your inclination to automatically lead walking with  your right foot or put your watch on your left wrist every morning before you leave the house. It's simply a connection that your brain has had reinforced connected with deep emotion over a period of time. In the case of food, your brain equates food with comfort.

Are You Really Hungry? For What?

Today I woke up quite early, around 5:00 a.m. I ran right into my office and began finishing up the tasks that I had left over from yesterday. I have been working on a new article and a survey. It's for women to take to determine if they are obsessed by food and weight. I know I used to think about food and beat myself up over not having the perfect body, before I learned how to eat intuitively and handle my stress with Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT, a powerful stress relief technique based on the ancient science of Acupuncture. Thanks to EFT, now I'm more at peace with myself and my body more than ever.

Anyway, before I knew it, the clock said, “7:00 a.m.”

My tummy rumbled and I felt the sensations of what I now know to be hunger. Yet I paused for a moment and realized that my body has acclimated itself to having breakfast or my first meal of the day around 11:00 or 12:00.

Knowing this, I paused at the top of the stairs and asked myself, “What do I really want?”
Then once I got the response, I knew that I was exhausted and what I really wanted was to go back to sleep. It’s so nice to have the luxury of having my own business that gives me the opportunity to make up  my own hours and sleep whenever I want to.
