    Losing weight without dieting begins with self acceptance

    I was inspired today when I popped onto my buddy, Tuck Self’s blog and read a post that she wrote about hiring practices of women in the 40’s. It shows how, in many ways we’ve come a long way, baby!

    Tuck shared 11 tips for hiring women from the article in Transportation Magazine in 1943. Give it a read. It’s a real eye opener.

    After I read that pig-headedly outdated and disempowered view of women, I just had to take a stand and share my voice, so I got my trusty camcorder and said my peace.

    Of the two tips, that I mention in the above video, this is the one that has the most meat:

    “General experience indicates that “husky” girls - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters tend to be.

    How freakin’ sad is that? Have you ever stopped to wonder which came first – weight gain or living with a low self esteem, people-pleasing through life pretending to be even tempered and friendly?

    Does a woman gain weight because she doesn’t feel safe expressing herself or saying "No" or is she unable to express herself because she’s heavy? The truth is it goes both ways because our internal self image guides us to act in ways consistent with whatever belief we have of ourself. If you like yourself and you think of yourself as a pretty cool person, capable, talented and wonderful, then you'll have a positive self image. You won't likely fall into the pit of stuffing down your emotions with food.

    On the other hand if you've got a small boatload of negative and painful memories, like I used to, it's easy to understand why you would want to hide from that by using food as a refuge and so the cycle of self condemnation continues. There is a solution out of this rat race. Say goodbye to dieting and learn how to make peace with food.

    I’ve wasted a lot of time trying to find the perfect diet that would give me the freedom to be myself. Now I realize that it’s not a question of putting the blame on someone or something else. It’s a question of not taking the responsibility to do something different. I had to change the way that I saw myself. I learned how to do that and now I'm eager to show other women how to do the same thing so that they can enjoy the same benefits as me.
